Should leave your hand on the parking brake so you can stop the car. I do it while teaching my gf to park (shes been driving for over two years and i still have to park her tiny car for her). I've had to use it to stop the car before.

That's fair enough since the mercury is a large car, I'd take a little while to get used to it. My girlfriend's car is tiny though, no idea why she cant work out how to park it. I've demonstrated to her, talked her through it and nothing seems to work.
